Havelock

The Harrier Monument of Havelock
The Harrier Monument of Havelock

Located in eastern North Carolina in Craven County, midway between historic New Bern and the pristine Crystal Coast beaches, Havelock has much to offer.

Stand on the banks of the Neuse River near the mouth of Slocum Creek, and it will be easy to see why the first European settlers arriving around 1690 considered this place a paradise.  Havelock has been a community for more than 300 years. It has survived Indian wars, a struggle for independence, and a civil war. The city was named for one of the great characters of world history, May. Gen. Sir Henry Havelock. It was prosperous as a focal point of international exporting of Naval stores. At one point it was populated by bootlegging outlaws. Then, during World War II, it became the home of the second Marine Air Wing and Marine Corps Air Station, Cherry Point.

Water, Water Everywhere! The Neuse River, connecting creeks, and surrounding forest provide endless recreational opportunities. Three of the creeks, Slocum, Hancock, and Clubfoot on the southern edge of the Neuse are so large they would likely be called rivers in other parts of the country. They are the source of fish, crabs, and shrimp. Waterfront and water access communities along the Neuse and creeks offer a variety of single and multi family Havelock homes for sale. The Neuse, a deep water river, is often the preferred location of sailing.

The Intracoastal Waterway (ICW) is easily accessible from Havelock.  Many communities offering coastal Carolina homes for sale have boat launches, community pools, and golf. There are numerous public boat launches and public beach accesses throughout the area.

Come watch the sun go down!

New Bern

The iconic city hall clock tower in Downtown New Bern

Historic New Bern is a great place to visit and is also one of the premier retirement communities anywhere around.  Downtown New Bern is centered around the joining of two rivers, the Neuse and the Trent.  This provides a great protected harbor for boating, lots of waterfront for river front lots and homes and of course, great fishing.

New Bern was the first capital of North Carolina and is where you’ll find the historic Tryon Palace, spectacular gardens, historic homes, quaint shops, cozy restaurants, and lively entertainment. In fact, New Bern has just celebrated its 300th anniversary in 2010.  There are many historic New Bern homes plus new developments and golf courses. This mix of condos, historic homes and golf course homes creates a friendly, relaxed atmosphere.

New Bern is also well known for other things such as being the birthplace of Pepsi Cola. Originally developed by a pharmacist, Caleb Bradham, the cola-based drink was called “Brad’s Drink”, which later he patented as Pepsi Cola. Today, you can relax and enjoy a Pepsi Cola in the recreated soda fountain downtown and purchase a souvenir.

New Bern is also home to the bestselling novelist Nicholas Sparks. Sparks moved to Newbern after publishing his first big seller, The Notebook, and has stated the friendly community, historical background, and beautiful waterfront have made it an ideal choice for him to raise his children.

New Bern real estate also includes nearby communities like Trent Woods and Bridgeton and is host to the annual Mumfest which has something for everyone! Come see for yourself all the treasure New Bern has to offer.

Cherry Point

The Cherry Point Air Show

It is said that the name “Cherry Point” comes from a post office established in the area for the Blades Lumber people some years ago. The post office was closed in 1935. The original “Point” was on the south side of the Neuse River east of Hancock Creek, and the word “Cherry” came from the cherry trees that at one time grew on the point.

Now Cherry Point Marine Corp Air Station is the largest employer in Havelock and the surrounding area. This has created growth in Havelock real estate with both military families and civilian employee families. Many events take place throughout the year such as the Cherry Point Air Show and the Havelock Chili Festival.

Havelock/Cherry Point provides a great mix of homes from small townhouses to waterfront mansions with everything in between. With much of the area being rural, large lots are available if desired. As a military area, it is a great example of the melting pot of the United States with people coming here from all over the U.S.  Just remember, Semper Fi!
