Beaufort, North Carolina is the crown jewel of the Crystal Coast. It was in 1709 that the town was established on the grounds of a former Indian village. It has a rich maritime heritage filled with pirates, Indians and English history. Located at the mouth of Beaufort Inlet, this town was a port of destination since the early 1700’s. Later designated as “FishTown”, there is a long history of fishing, boat building and maritime research. Duke University and NOOA have both been community partners for over 70 years. With the cultural activities offered by the NC Maritime Museum, Beaufort Historic Association and The Rachel Carson Estuarine Research Reserve, the town has achieved a cosmopolitan atmosphere while maintaining its fishing roots. The Old Burying Ground is a favorite haunt of tourists and locals alike. Graves date back to the 1600’s and stories abound about the inhabitants there.
Many of the homes built as far back as the late 1600’s are lovingly maintained and preserved. Some of these homes are open to the public every June during the BHA’s Old Homes and Gardens Tour. You will find homes of all styles but the Bahamian influence is evident as you tour the town. Small quaint cottages are situated beside large two story mansions adding to the village like atmosphere you will find here. As the town has grown and prospered, many more areas have been developed and a wide assortment of homes is available now. You can have your choice from waterfront homes, golf course homes, condos, single family homes to development homes.
All of this is available within a short distance to the magnificent water ways of the Crystal Coast. Recreational fishing and water sports are popular attractions as well as beaches with pristine white sand, elegant restaurants, crab shacks, and local eateries. Beaufort has a first class golf course, The Beaufort Club, a small private airport and delightful shops on the waterfront.
